Cheerful mess
TV commercial for Beech Nut chewing gum with striped fruit flavor. Fantasy animals swing through the picture praising the gum. It ends up in a fun and cheerful mess.
Trivia
The figures could be found as childlike drawings on the packaging of the gum and in advertisements. A zebra, elephant, cat and a mouse acted in several commercials. It was a commercially daring experiment at the time to replace the chanted slogan "Buy Beech Nut - Buy gum!" with "Yipes! Stripes!" With this slogan, the zebra entered a solo career. The reason why the zebra was chosen on the packaging is obvious. It was the link to the gum. The zebra later also appeared as a cartoon character.
In order not to completely forget the classic jingle, it is said one more time at the end, "Buy Beech Nut, buy gum!" On the packaging, the brand name Beech Nut is no longer prominently mentioned.
Development in concept
Several Beech Nut commercials can be found on this website. This series is far from complete, but it gives a good idea of the development of the advertising formula. You can see that first the melody was used in combination with cheerful (product) animation. The films became increasingly more loose and cheerful. In this film, the famous jingle is gone but to still be reminded of it, at the end it is said one more time, "Buy Beech Nut, buy gum!"
This commercial has a running time of only half a minute. This is short compared to other Dollywood films, where a similar message was told in 2 minutes. Broadcast time on TV is considerably more expensive than in the cinema.
