Story

This film about the typical Dutch character (a farmer), Dutchy, who dreams of selling his milk all over the world. When he wakes up, his dream turns out to come true.

Trivia

The character, Dutchy, had already been seen as a trademark on the various packaging of Dutch dairy products for several years in 1955. The Dutch Dairy Board (NZB) was not a company but a collective. A commercial trade association for milk producers. The board of the NZB made an important decision by asking Joop Geesink to promote this film. After "A Dream comes True", several more films would follow starring this striking farmer. The next one was also released in 1955. The original working title of this film was Dutchy's Dream. With the commercial success of A Dream Comes True, the NZB's dream came true a bit more.

Full series

We the editors are very happy to have been able to add full series in high resolution to this website. The total length of these various films added together approaches the length of a full-length feature film, which in the 1950s was considerably shorter than today.
The films were shown in many countries both in cinemas and at NZB promotional meetings for potential buyers. These films contributed to the image that 'all Dutch people' walk on clogs. The for the sake of communicating quickly with images, Joop Geesink often grabbed well-known images to represent a country. What is now seen as a stereotype, used to be considered a tribute to that country's cultural heritage.

'The making of'

The client, the Dutch Dairy Agency also used the medium of film to inform members across the country about its work. The 1955 Dairy Film Journal, for instance, featured an amusing passage on the making of this film. It can be seen elsewhere on the site.

The 'Dutchy' logo was a design by Kees van Roemburg. This poster is to promote an exhibition the "milky way" in 1960.
