Advertising film for Guinness beer.
Story
The stevedore (loader) at the port notices that a truck is overloaded. The crane threatens to collapse. Fortunately, he has just drunk a bottle of Guinness beer, giving him unprecedented strength. He arranges to unload the load. The slogan is ‘Guinness for strenght’. This could refer to its powerful taste, but also to its supposed superpowers.
Trivia
Joop Geesink produced three films for Guinness beer in a short time on the same theme. Always a variation on the Popeye theme, in which you gain superhuman strength by eating or drinking a product. This theme can be seen in several Geesink films and remarkably often in combination with alcohol consumption. Nowadays, this would not be accepted. This website has another film, ‘Horse Sense’ (1955). The third film, ‘Feeding Time’ from the same period has not yet been found.
For the close-up of muscle, there was a specially prepared puppet arm.
Guinness Book of Records
A remarkable coincidence is, these films humorously showcased a superhuman feat. History does not mention whether there was a direct correlation with the issuance of the first book to achieve fame under the title Guinness Book of Records. It also appeared during this period. Indeed, the client for the book was the same beer manufacturer. That the records book would become a worldwide success, no one foresaw. Who knows, there might otherwise have been a reference in the film to this book.
