The Interesting Guest

(1951)

Magic in the living room.

Promotional film for Philips TVs.

Synopsis

A luxury car with a chauffeur drives down an ordinary street. It stops outside someone’s front door. Neighbours watch from behind their windows. The guest is shown into the living room. An exotic-looking magician performs an astonishing trick. It then turns out that the magician was not physically present in the room, but on a television set.

Trivia

This film dates from 1951. The period following the Second World War, when everything was in short supply and the sight of a television set in the living room was certainly not an everyday occurrence. The punchline of this advert – that you can witness the most extraordinary events via the television – was undoubtedly a special experience at that time.

Joop Geesink had enjoyed a good, friendly and professional relationship with Philips’ Advertising Director, Mr Sies Numan, for quite some time. Together, they were constantly coming up with new film ideas like this one. They also collaborated on longer films.
