Story

Dutchy brings the pseudo-world news. Numerous fictionalised comic situations are presented as current affairs and always turn out to have a link to the character Dutchy or the dairy products, which he always carries with him.

Newsreel

At the time these films were made, it was not yet common (in the Netherlands) to make TV news as we know it today. For this, there were still too few TV sets in households and the time needed to make a TV programme was too long. For this reason, World News was a well-known programme in Dutch cinema. The topics were relatively timeless, so a newsreel could be shown for several weeks before being replaced by a new one. In this way, a wide audience could be informed. In the Netherlands, the Polygoon newsreel, with the voice over of Philip Bloemendaal, was legendary.
Dutchy news picked up on this success and, thanks to the use of colour images and self-created funny subjects, was able to appeal to audiences. As well as the traditional film news, which could sometimes run in cinemas for several weeks, required new topics. It is known to the editors of this site that at least two different ‘world newsreel’ films were made. There is a chance that it was the intention of Joop Geesink, to have multiple programmes of films made. Although the concept was certainly suitable for this, the client also had to agree to this, as they had to pay the production costs. No documentation exists about the course of this film concept.

Trivia

The first ‘news item’ shows a plane landing. An important guest gets off the plane and immediately greets Dutchy.
An observant fan of this website realised that the plane, which came through image, was an existing toy plane. Such tin toy models were sold in the 1950s. The plane is likely to have had a length of about 40 to 50 cm. It was much cheaper for the set department of Joop Geesink's Dollywood to buy a ready-made plane from the model shop and repaint it in their own colours, rather than build the plane entirely. The director cleverly worked with two different scale sizes. The second shot, in which the guest comes out, shows a detail of the body. Only the door and a porthole were built to a larger scale. The nose and tail of the plane were not in the picture and thus were not made. Because cinema audiences saw the entire plane pass by shortly before, the impression was created that the whole plane was that big.
In other films, such as in ‘The Story of Light’ (1954), tin toy cars are used to fill the miniature streets.
